information + social software + wikipedia07 Jun 2007 02:44 am

i was searching our library catalogue for books on wikis, and was surprised to find a record for wikipedia added to the catalogue by several hospitals…

first of all, i wonder why the BBC is listed as a contact in the library record’s contents note… the review of wikipedia is from ALA’s RUSA group, and the wikipedia contact us page makes no reference to BBC:

Wikipedia is almost completely operated by volunteers. Though it provides a free service without advertisement, it is a private enterprise and privately funded. It has no “editorial board”, and its articles are written by volunteers around the world.

secondly, i guess in lieu of a family doctor, i will have to consult doctor wikipedia, stat!

greetings from San Francisco @ Educause Western Regional Conference:
Next-Gen IT: New Leaders, New Students, New Directions, and Expectations

i kicked off the conference by attending a pre-conference workshop called Fitting New Emerging Technologies into our Existing Learning Management Systems, presented by Cyprien Lomas from UBC.

the session provoked interesting discussion on the potential intersection between emerging trends like:

social networks like Facebook, MySpace
locative applications like Twitter
user-created content apps like youtube, Flickr
virtual worlds like Second Life
tagging of content
social bookmarking tools like del.ico.us

and learning management systems (LMS) like:

WebCT
Blackboard
Sakai
Moodle
Angel
Desire2Learn

the “swiss army knife” nature of learning management systems already makes it a place for instructors to do many things, like post course content and grades, give quizzes, and communicate with students via discussion boards, e-mail, and chat.

my question is “how can we enhance collaboration, communication, and community by integrating emerging technologies into an LMS like WebCT?” but instead of answers i have more questions, particularly relevant to social software: will students use these tools? do students want us where they are? (in the case of Facebook and MySpace), what about privacy, security, and campus policies?

maybe the question becomes not only how do we integrate these new technologies with the existing features, but which technologies, and why?

oh, george, with your shifted (DST), a pox upon your whitehouse!

in an effort to save energy, US congress passed a mandating US to spring forward 3 weeks earlier than normal, and to fall back a week later than normal, commencing 2007. in an effort to sync with our neighbours to the south, canada is also observing an extended DST.

there is some debate as to whether this change will indeed save energy, but it is clearly causing me much expended energy…

first a maladjusted outlook calendar at work, throwing my work schedule into disarray, and requiring more patches than a patchwork quilt. now a missed corner gas episode, thanks to an auto-update that didn’t auto-update, wreaking havoc on the PVR, and recording not the corner gas finale gopher it, but half of law and order instead. sigh!

funnily, saskatchewan, home of corner gas, does not observe DST, and therefore Dog River was not impacted by such trifle annoyances!
