during the next fortnight or so, i will be celebrating discardia, a floating holiday which “takes place in the time between the Solstices & Equinoxes and their following new moons” — so between june 21st () and july 14th () i will be celebrating… nothing!

Discardia is celebrated by getting rid of stuff and ideas you no longer need. It’s about letting go, abdicating from obligation and guilt, being true to the self you are now. Discardia is the time to get rid of things that no longer add value to your life, shed bad habits, let go of emotional baggage and generally lighten your load. — MetaGrrrl

this takes my annual summer decluttering catharsis a step further, moving beyond the material into the spiritual, emotional and virtual.

for the last couple of months i have been using the PocketMod, an ingenious origami pda. essentially a mini-DIY-daytimer, it is cheap and easy to make, and i make one for each month to keep my life organized. i carry it around in my wallet and whip it out anytime i need to make plans…

see some PocketMods in action on flickr.

here is what the folks at PocketMod say:

  1. It fits easily in your back pocket or purse.
  2. It’s as cheap as one piece of paper (Because that’s all it is!)
  3. It opens like a book. Leading to easier to find, more organized notes.
  4. The first page has a pouch, big enough to carry a business card!
  5. Customizable with “Mods” tailored to your needs.
  6. It’s free and fun!
PocketMod, the origami organizer!
it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s an origami organizer!

along the lines of same same but different is Netvibes, a “custom made web 2.0 home page solution” that i stumbled upon while bloglining (it was being used as an event planning aggregator — good idea!)

similar to SuprGlu, it aggregates your feeds in one convenient place, but different in that (1) it is private (2) it updates in realtime and (3) you can incorporate e-mail accounts, to-do lists, websearching and webnotes alongside RSS and ATOM feeds to blogs, flickr, del.icio.us, CiteULike, and a myriad of other sources. it also supports OPML files.

i especially like the built-in podcast player!

(okay, more different and less same same than SuprGlu)
